FAQ

1. Who can take part in the Quit to Win! Challenge?

The Quit to Win! Challenge is open to anyone who wants to take advantage of the strength and support offered by this collective campaign to quit smoking, with an initial goal of 6 weeks in mind.

There are no age or residency restrictions.

However, prizes will be awarded to Quebec residents: the grand prize of $5,000 is reserved for those aged 18 and over, and the Jean Coutu gift card for those aged 12 and over. See all prize details.

NEW IN 2024: The Quit Vaping component, intended for people who don’t smoke, but who vape.

2. Am I eligible for the Quit Smoking component of the Challenge?

To be eligible, you must be a regular smoker (cigarettes or other tobacco products) as of December 20, 2023, and commit to not smoking from February 5 to March 17, 2024, inclusively. Registered participants must commit to not smoking until the date on which the winners are announced (March 21, 2024) and, if applicable, until they have passed a screening test.

Vaping (with or without nicotine) is not prohibited, since vaping does not include tobacco products. However, we recommend that people wishing to quit smoking first and foremost use smoking cessation medications recognized by Health Canada, as well as free national support services.

See the rules for more details.

3. Am I eligible for the Quit Vaping component of the Challenge?

To be eligible, you must be a regular user of nicotine-containing vaping products as of December 20, 2023, and commit to stop vaping any type of liquid from February 5 to March 17, 2024, inclusively. Registered participants must commit to not vaping until the date on which the winners are announced (March 21, 2024) and, if applicable, until they have passed a screening test.

You must also pledge not to smoke or consume tobacco-containing products during this same period.

IMPORTANT: People who smoke AND vape must register for the Quit Smoking component if they wish to participate in the Quit to Win! Challenge. It is not permitted to register for both components at the same time.

See the rules for more details.

4. What is the deadline for registering?

You can register for the Challenge until February 5, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. EST. After February 6, 2024 at midnight (12:00 a.m. EST), it will no longer be possible to register.

5. Once my registration is confirmed, can I quit smoking or vaping before the Challenge start date?

You can stop smoking or vaping whenever you’d like as of December 20, 2023. However, to be eligible for the draws, you must abstain from smoking or vaping for the Challenge period, from February 5 to March 17, 2024, inclusively. Registered participants must commit to not smoking until the date on which the winners are announced (March 21, 2024) and, if applicable, until they have passed a screening test.

6. Can I use medications to quit smoking during the Challenge?

Using smoking cessation medications (nicotine patches, gums, lozenges, inhalers and mouth sprays, varenicline or bupropion pills) is allowed during the Challenge for both smokers and vapers.

7. Can I smoke or vape cannabis during the Challenge?

All Challenge participants commit to not smoking or consuming products containing tobacco during the 6 weeks of the Challenge. Therefore, smoking a cannabis joint with tobacco is not permitted.

People registered in the Quit Vaping component may not use any vaping device, regardless of what it contains, during the 6 weeks of the Challenge.

8. How do you ensure that people keep their commitment not to smoke or vape?

When awarding the prizes, we make sure that the winners have actually successfully completed the chosen challenge. They have to answer a questionnaire about their efforts to quit, and sign an official declaration stating that they have not smoked or vaped during the Challenge period. We may also contact their friends and family to confirm this. The grand prize winner must also undergo a screening test.

9. What happens if I relapse during the Challenge?

Having a relapse is not a reason to abandon your plan to quit smoking or vaping. However, it does make you ineligible for Challenge prizes.

10. If I live in a place where there is lots of smoke, will I fail the test because of the second-hand smoke?

Second-hand smoke is more diluted than the smoke inhaled when smoking, so it leaves fewer traces in the body. In the event of a contentious case, other measures will be applied to determine your status.
